ECEIM standard residency position at Oniris Veterinary teaching Hospital (France)
The equine clinic of Oniris (CISCO) is opening a position for a resident in Equine Internal Medicine (ECEIM standard residency program) for the period 2025–2028. This residency program offers the opportunity to develop in-depth knowledge in equine internal medicine and related disciplines, such as critical care, diagnostic imaging, anesthesiology, clinical pathology, and pathology, in accordance with the guidelines of the European College of Equine Internal Medicine (ECEIM).
The CISCO provides consultations across all disciplines, surgical procedures, hospitalizations, and a 24/7 emergency service, while also training future equine veterinarians (5th-year students, 6th-year equine specialization students, as well as interns and residents). The facility includes 50 hospitalization stalls, featuring multiple intensive care units and specialized mare/foal stalls. Additionally, it houses five consultation rooms, two surgical suites—each equipped with two recovery stalls—a dedicated round pen for orthopedic examinations, and a state-of-the-art reproduction center. A new, cutting-edge isolation building for contagious cases is also under construction, set to replace the existing facility. The team includes more than 20 equine veterinarians, among whom are six EBVS-recognized veterinary specialists (two Diplomates of the ECEIM, three Diplomates of the ECVS, one Diplomate of the ECVAA, and one Diplomate of the ECAR), as well as two ECEIM residents, two ECVS residents, one ECVAA resident, one ECAR resident, two to four hospital assistants, and four to nine interns.
The CISCO’s internal medicine department manages a caseload of approximately 500 to 550 cases per year, primarily involving sport and leisure horses. These cases cover a wide range of medical disorders across all categories required by the ECEIM, including gastrointestinal, respiratory, cardiology, neonatal, urinary, neurological, and sports medicine cases.
This ECEIM standard residency program has a minimum duration of three years (156 weeks), however, we offer a fourth year of contract to allow the resident full preparation for the ECEIM board exam. The resident will be supervised by a program supervisor and secondary supervisors. At least 60% of the total time (94 weeks) will be allocated to working in CISCO’s internal medicine department under the direct supervision of ECEIM Diplomates. The resident will also be required to participate in night and weekend on-call duties, with financial compensation for these on-call activities starting in the second year of the contract.
During the residency, external rotations in specific areas and attendance at international conferences (e.g., ECEIM, ACVIM, or BEVA congresses) are planned and will be supported financially by the clinic. The resident will also be expected to prepare weekly journal club sessions and book readings, actively participate in practical and clinical teaching for students, and contribute to research activities within the team. Additionally, the resident must complete a research project leading to one or two articles accepted for publication in an international peer-reviewed journal.
The candidate must hold a degree in veterinary medicine, have completed a 12-month internship or possess equivalent experience in accordance with ECEIM guidelines, be eligible to practice veterinary medicine in Europe and should have good proficiency in both French and English.
