CERTIFYING
ESSAY PAPER
- Please answer only TWO of the three essay
questions
- Please ensure that
you ANSWER ALL PARTS of the
question.
- Each part of the
essay question is followed by a percent value in parenthesis (e.g. [50%])
– this represents the percentage of the overall mark that will be
attributed to that particular part of the question.
- You have 3.5 hours
(210 minutes) to complete this paper.

- Marks will not be
awarded or deducted for English grammar, spelling and style.
- Use bullet points,
diagrams and/or brief statements where appropriate.
- If you choose to write your essays on paper;
- Please use a
separate examination booklet for each essay
- Ensure that you
write your candidate number on the front of both examination booklets
- Additional paper
sheets are available if needed (N.B. ensure that you write your candidate
number on any additional paper sheets)
- Please ensure that
your writing is legible - you may lose marks if your writing is not
legible
- When you have
finished, please give both booklets to the examination supervisor
- If you choose to type your essays using the word
processor;
- You must not access
the internet or use external drives other than the USB storage device
provided.
- Write both essays
in a single Word file, but ensure there is a page break between essays
- Remember to save
your file to the Desktop throughout the duration of the examination (this
is YOUR responsibility).
- Save the file as
‘’ECEIM candidate ##.doc’’ (## = candidate number)
- When you have
finished;
- Copy file to the USB
storage device provided
- Do NOT delete the
desktop file
- Accompany the
examination supervisor to the printer (where your document will be
printed)
- Sign the printed
version
- To avoid disturbance
of other candidates, you may not leave the examination room during the
first 30 minutes, but may leave any time thereafter.

a)
List 5 equine disorders which cause polydipsia/polyuria (5%).
b)
For
each of the 5 disorders you have listed, describe the mechanisms which lead to polydipsia/polyuria (50%).
c)
Describe
how you would investigate a horse with polydipsia/polyuria
(45%).
ESSAY QUESTION 2
a)
Describe the pathophysiology of equine post-operative
ileus, including risk factors for the development of post-operative ileus
(40%).
b)
Discuss the management of equine post-operative ileus,
including
a.
the modes of action,
evidence for efficacy and potential adverse effects of four prokinetic
drugs (30%).
b.
additional treatments (30%).
ESSAY QUESTION 3
a)
List the disorders which can result in diffuse skeletal muscle
weakness in the horse (10%).
b)
Discuss the aetiopathogenesis of four of
the disorders you have listed (30%).
c)
Discuss how you would attempt to differentiate the disorders you
have listed, with reference to signalment, case
history, clinical examination and additional diagnostic methods (60%).
